Get to Know Dr. Weng

“Pain is unique to each individual and impacts each person differently. It is important that we build a treatment plan together that makes sense to the patient, and one that they feel confident in.”

Daniel Weng, MD is a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician specializing in interventional pain management. He focuses on the nonsurgical treatment of back and neck pain, including spine-related pain, sacroiliac joint pain, and myofascial pain.

Dr. Weng was drawn to PM&R because of its focus on musculoskeletal health, function, and quality of life. He further specialized in interventional pain management to help patients address pain that can interfere with function, recovery, and daily life. His approach combines careful evaluation, patient education, and image-guided treatments tailored to each patient's needs and goals. His expertise includes epidural steroid injections, nerve blocks and ablations, nerve conduction studies and electromyography (NCS/EMG), and neuromodulation.

For Dr. Weng, medicine is fundamentally about relationships. His philosophy of care centers on empowerment, autonomy, and perseverance. He wants patients to become experts in their own pain management, with him serving as a trusted advisor, compassionate voice, and skilled proceduralist when needed. He believes patients should play an active role in determining their treatment plan because they are the ones living with their pain.

Dr. Weng's perspective is also informed by personal experience. During his residency training, he experienced a lower back injury that caused severe back and leg pain, requiring an extended period of treatment and rehabilitation. Navigating the healthcare system and living with this pain gave him a deeper understanding of the uncertainty and day-to-day challenges patients may face. He brings that perspective to his relationships with patients and recognizes that treating persistent pain can require perseverance, patience, and hope.

Dr. Weng earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania and his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He completed his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, followed by a fellowship at UCLA's PM&R Spine Program.

Before and during his medical training, Dr. Weng also worked at the intersection of medicine and technology, including operations strategy, data analysis, clinical research, and digital health.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Weng enjoys playing basketball and volleyball, watching the New York Knicks, experimenting with AI tools, and watching anime with his wife. He also has a cat he adopted from a New York City shelter—one who, according to Dr. Weng, has “very much a New York City attitude.” He loves him anyway.
