Robotic Technology for Total Knee Replacement
Mako SmartRobotics™ is a high-precision surgical robot used by our surgeons at a hospital our doctors operate at near our Los Gatos office.
It helps our surgeons to simplify the knee replacement surgery by providing valuable insights, versatile execution, and verified performance which delivers efficiency and optimizes patient outcomes.

Who Would Benefit from Mako Total Knee Replacement?
Osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis, is a degenerative condition that results in the loss of joint cartilage (the cushioning between the bones).
Total knee replacement (TKR) is performed to remove the damaged bone tissues and replace them with artificial components (also called implants or prostheses) in order to relieve pain and restore normal function.
Patients with early to mid-stage osteoarthritis, who have symptoms such as knee pain, swelling and knee locking, and who have not responded to conservative treatments, are candidates for surgery with the Mako knee system.
The Mako knee system is available at a hospital our doctors operate at near our Los Gatos office.
Other robots that are used by our surgeons are available at hospitals (which our doctors can operate at) near Capitola, Walnut Creek Redwood, and Walnut Creek Sequoia offices.

Videos
Watch educational videos that explain how your procedure is performed, what to expect during recovery, and how the procedure can restore comfort and mobility.
Before Surgery
Most of your preoperative experience will be the same as for anyone undergoing total knee replacement, but a Mako robotics surgery will also require a CT scan that will be used to create a 3-dimensional model of your knee’s anatomy in the Mako computer. Your surgeon will use this model to plan your knee replacement surgery.

During Surgery
Your specially trained surgeon will guide the Mako system’s robotic arm to remove damaged bone within a predetermined area. The Mako system helps your surgeon stay within the planned area and to adjust the plan during surgery as needed to make the placement of your implants as accurate as possible.

After Surgery
You may be allowed to return home the same day you have your surgery depending on your surgeon’s evaluation. Your unique needs will help determine your recovery plan and affect the duration of your recovery. Your surgeon will advise you on physical therapy and when it’s safe to return to driving and other activities.
