Golden State Orthopedics and Spine has an excellent staff. The front office staff is very friendly and helpful. The back office staff is no less. Very knowledgeable and thorough, Dr. Toma, my orthopedic surgeon, is also very helpful because he listens to understand, answers my questions, and explains thoroughly and thoughtfully the information I request. His surgical skills have improved greatly the lives of my family and friends who have needed surgery. They all have given me their highest recommendation of Dr. Toma, which is why I didn’t hesitate to see him for my left hip and sacroiliac back pain. Dr. Toma is an excellent surgeon. He replaced both hips 3mths apart. My only complaint was, altho I was in tremendous pain with the first hip, it took two years to get the surgery. Not sure why it took so long, but it was very hard waiting in so much pain. Thankfully, the second hip surgery flowed seamlessly from the first and took place in a more timely manner. Dr Toma’s staff was pleasant to work with and showed a comforting level of teamwork.

Dr Toma is an excellent surgeon from the preparatory phase before surgery through the recovery phase. His ability to communicate helped me through the process which was as good as his ability as a surgeon. The hip replacement on right hip four years ago left no doubt he was the surgeon for my second hip on my left side. I now walk and work without any pain or residual issues thanks to his professional abilities.

I chose Dr. Toma for my first hip replacement surgery in 2021 (right hip), based on his excellent reputation. He was recommended by my primary doctor, and a nurse. I was not disappointed. I chose Dr. Toma again for my recent hip replacement (left hip) and would recommend him to my friends.

I had two hip replacements. One on December 1st 2023 and the second on April 3rd of this year. Delighted to say that both surgeries are a resounding success. Thanks to Dr Toma's skill set recoveries were a snap and at the age of 77 I'm good as new. He is a busy guy due to his reputation of success.

I had my hip replaced by Dr. Toma two years ago and just recently I had my other side knee replaced. I can’t tell you how surprised I was at the ease of recovery, as long as you do all the exercises! You just have to know what to expect, and do as Dr. Toma and his awesome staff tell you. The pre-surgery and after surgery exercises are critical. He has been very attentive and helpful with any pre and post operation questions. Nobody wants to have a joint replacement but if you have to have a knee or a hip. I would absolutely recommend Dr. Toma 1000%.

Doc Toma is an excellent orthopedic surgeon. I had my first hip replacement by him in 2018. I am almost 48 hrs post and feel great am walking in the backyard with walker and some without. Best hip surgeon!!!

Dr. Toma replaced both my hips, the second in December, 2024. He is, quite simply, the best there is. I had no pain following either operation and have been able to walk unassisted within a day of surgery. I’ve heard horror stories of people getting the wrong size hips and pain that lasts for months following surgery. By comparison, my experience has been a breeze. Dr. Toma inspires complete confidence, with his friendly and positive bedside manner. I feel blessed to have had him replace my hips!

Dr. Toma performed my two hip replacements this year. He is the consummate professional. So kind and caring. I highly recommend him.

I love the fact that Dr. Toma treats me like a human being not just a patient. He listens to what I have to say and accepts me opinion about my health. However, his nurse who takes your blood pressure needs an attitude check-up!

Dr. Toma has a very personable and calm manner. I felt very comfortable and confident with his diagnosis and explanation of my options. I plan to have him replace my hip some day.

This is my 2nd hip replacement, now 4 weeks out from surgery. I was out of bed and walking about 6 hours after surgery was completed. The spinal anesthesia plus sedation (not general anesthesia) was so great. Mobility has been terrific (walking >30 min at a time, up and down hills), strength returning with physical therapy. Graduated to a cane at about 10 days postop. Pain has been controlled with only Tylenol. I would return to Dr. Toma and team in a heartbeat for hip replacement. Airica was my scheduler, who kept me infor.ed and on task in the weeks leading up to surgery. I appreciated the text-based education pre- and post-op, reminders about what to expect, my next steps, and making sure I was on track to be in best shape for recovery. Great experience all around.

Dr Toma’s minimally invasive hip replacement surgery allowed a quick recovery. Visits to the office were quick with very little wait time. Very happy with my results.

Dr. Toma Is an amazing hip replacement surgeon! I am so lucky to have found him. I was in pain with every step. Now, I’m playing pickle ball with my wife as my doubles partner and we are much more formidable Now that I am not in pain. I also enjoy playing so much More! The recovery was not difficult at all! I was up and walking 30 minutes after I woke up in the recovery room. I’m not saying I was running marathons, but I was walking around my neighborhood the next day with very little pain. There is some pain that lingers for a bit as your body heals from this major surgery. But nothing to worry about! I think Dr. Toma’s is a great doctor and a very nice human being and I would recommend him to anybody thinking about hip replacement surgery. He is the best!

Dr. Toma was my surgeon for a full knee replacement surgery. My experience with him was outstanding. First, in addition to being very empathetic, he is an excellent communicator. He has a way of putting you at ease while explaining options and procedures. I found his approach to be very open and friendly. Second, his skills as a surgeon is second to non. My hip degenerated to the point I simply was in pain all the time. I lived on Tylenol and ibuprofen- way too much. Water walking in the pool was the only exercise I could do. Someone recommended Dr Louay Toma. A truly lucky recommendation for me. First: All staff interactions were beyond personal. Fast responses to my questions. Made me feel I asked important questions. How could they all be that great??? Second: the surgery. What can I say. It was night and day difference - -immediately. I could walk. Even the surgical site wasn’t that painful. I limped into the hospital at 5 am Monday. I walked out at 2 pm Tuesday. ( ok. They insisted on wheelchair, but I was able to walk) Able to do all basic needs with no help. (Had friend pick up meds and groceries) Which was important, as my husband was in nursing home. After 2 weeks I was driving. Could have done it sooner. Just being cautious. Every day I marvel at the difference. I can walk. Granted, I have to build back up to my former level. I get tired and my back starts to ache. (I’m overweight) I paid for the kinomatic v.r. Scan. Glad I did it. If you need hip surgery, I recommend Dr Toma without reservation. I live 1.5 hours from his office. Worth the drive!!! Talk to him! He’s a miracle worker. I wish there were words to adequately describe how positive my life is now. I will soon be back to hiking and international travel. I’m 75 years old. Dr Toma replaced my hip in early December. I was off painkillers 3 days after surgery and traded in my walker for a cane after a week. A lot goes into pre-op preparations and post up recovery procedures. Dr Toma's office provided a series of step by step worksheets to follow, both pre-op and post op which were invaluable. Now, 3 months after surgery, I am able to do everything that I did before surgery including hanging sheetrock. Dr. Toma was available at all times. He did a great job and he's a great guy as well.

Dr. Toma explained at length the knee replacement surgery procedure. He was very patient and put my mind at ease.

Several people that I know recommended Dr. Toma for my hip surgery. Even someone who has Kaiser as their insurance. Dr. Toma has a great reputation in the community as a surgeon and I agree with everyone’s assessment of him. I found Dr. Toma to have a calm, friendly demeanor. Nothing seems to phase him. It’s been one month since my surgery and I’m already walking at least 2 miles each day. I highly recommend him for anyone who needs a new hip!

In November of 2022 I had a left hip total arthroplasty procedure and the outcome is perfect. I was walking normally and pain free in only a few weeks. I can highly recommend Dr Toma and his team for the procedure.

Dr Toma is incredibly experienced in his specialty. This resulted in a highly accurate hip replacement and a shortened rehabilitation time with no infection or exacerbated symptoms. Dr. Toma did my hip surgery. I was in so much pain and of course I waited until the pain became unbearable. I kept holding off, and I remember him telling me, "You ready now?" lol. I was like, "Yessss!". I really miss having him as a doctor, and things kind of went downhill for me and I had to relocate. Plus, other things I won't put on here. My insurance changed also, and that's terrible. He's a wonderful surgeon, and did a great job on me. I even got a signature on my hip, hahaha! It looks bad, but I healed up real well. No pain after surgery

Dr. Toma, along with his P.A. Christine Martinez, did great work for me. My recovery is going very well, indeed. I also liked that the surgery was NOT done in the hospital but in a "Surgery Center".

Dr Toma replaced both my knees when I was 68 & my hip when I was 69. I'm now approaching 80 and still hiking with my poodle regularly and without pain. And he is very nice.

During my annual physical in May my PCP ordered some X-rays for my hips as I was having some mobility issues with my left hip and leg. The results showed that I had severe arthritis in both hips and that the cartilage was gone. He referred me to Dr Toma. I saw Dr Toma in July and he explained to me in great detail the issues with both hips and recommended hip replacement surgery for both with the left hip needing to be done first. At age 65 I had never had surgery or ever been an inpatient so I told him that I needed a couple of days to process his diagnosis. Several days later I contacted his office and we scheduled the surgery for September 15th and his staff patiently explained what needed to be done before the surgery date. The morning of the surgery I met Dr Toma and he put my mind at ease concerning the surgery and assured me that all would go well. He was right. Now 90 days after surgery and with the help of outstanding physical therapist I have great mobility and I can walk without any pain at all. Without any hesitation at all I would recommend Dr Toma to anyone who may be considering hip replacement surgery as his personal touch and his expertise in caring for his patients is a throwback to simpler times. The absolute best, I had my second total hip arthroplasty (both with Dr. Toma) in May 2021 with great results! The staff at Muir Ortho also treated me with great care.

I was walking and climbing on avascular necrosis of the femoral head as a phone installer/repair lineman for 12 years. I finally had the sugary 04-20-2016 and it was a godsend. I was told by countless orthopedic surgeons that I would never go back to work in that type of field because of the limitations of traditional posterior replacement surgery. I had a partial knee replacement May 2018. The outcome . . . . FLAWLESS. Another ortho indicated I needed a total knee replacement, Dr. Toma assured me that a partial was best, explaining my recovering would be quicker. In September 2018 I was able to return to a sport that requires forward, back and lateral movement. I feel fortunate to be under Dr. Toma's care. Additionally, each and every time I contacted a staff member, their assistance and help has been exemplary. Dr Louay Toma performed a successful knee revision (replacement of my original left knee replacement) on 2/15/19 at John Muir Hospital in Concord, CA.  He did a great job, replacing the original knee replacement with a new one so that now, 3.5 months after surgery, I am walking and navigating stairs, and performing all normal tasks without pain.  He is a wonderful, caring professional with top orthopedic surgical skills.  I feel very fortunate to have been his patient.  Thanks, Dr. Toma!

This is a 5 year post surgery review... Dr. Toma's expertise in replacing my left hip and then knee replacement the same year is still as great as the review I wrote 4 weeks post surgery.  I am more active today and pain free. While recovering from the knee surgery was more challenging than the hip, I still very pleased with the results.  Thank you Dr. T for giving me a chance at a happy, active and pain free life.

Dr. Toma & his team performed anterior total hip replacement (THR) surgery on my arthritic hip 5 months ago & changed my life!  I'm so glad that I chose Dr. Toma to be my surgeon- he has many years of experience doing this procedure / has performed thousands of hip replacements, is super down to earth & easy to talk to without an ounce of pretension & has a great team of caring pros helping him accomplish medical miracles!  I was diagnosed with moderate osteoarthritis in my hip @ age 47 after having participated in various different sporting activities throughout my life (softball 10+ years, competitive swimming for 10+ years, downhill skiing for 30 years, cycling, dancing, yoga, hiking & backpacking all over CA & other places). I had always identified as a physically fit, agile/capable & athletic person, was in denial about my condition & had never before undergone surgery.  Although I was still working, I was in constant pain, had to give up all physical activities except bike riding (which I shouldn't have been doing in my condition...) & was limping so severely that strangers who were walking near me on the sidewalks downtown where I worked were asking me on a regular basis if I was ok or needed help.  My osteoarthritis progressed from moderate to severe bone-on-bone within one year- I was given a cane (embarrassing!), a disabled person parking placard & was told that I would eventually have to undergo THR- it was just a matter of time. Unfortunately for me I refused to accept the medical facts- who ME??? But I'm only 47 years old & have never had any serious medical conditions despite years of physical activity!  I've never had even one surgery & have only broken 1 bone (clavicle) 25 years ago!  This cannot be right- these dr's are jacking with me / just trying to get my $$....NOT!!!  Lol. Retrospectively / if I could do it over again, I would go to Dr. Toma immediately upon dx & have the surgery rather than waste 2 years & over $5000 on PT & stem cell injections that did absolutely nothing to help my condition.  Fellow osteoarthritis of the hip patients, heed my warning: do NOT bother- I repeat DON'T waste your time or $$ on stem cells- they do not work for hip osteoarthritis! Have you heard the old saying "if it's too good to be true then it probably is"?  Yup- stem cells are too good to be true.  By the time I met Dr. Toma I had done EVERYTHING that I could possibly do to avoid going under the knife & was terrified of the whole procedure. After all, it's not every day that you let someone put you to sleep, cut open your thigh, saw off the top of your femur, drill a big hole in your bone & stuff a giant titanium rod in there...I was a nervous wreck about the whole thing but Dr. Toma calmly reassured me that I was an excellent candidate & would more than likely by very happy with the results, would be able to resume most of my physical activities & would be pain-free post surgery & guess what- he was right!  I had 3 pre-surgery appts. in which he & his staff (his nurse Christina is awesome- also super nice & knowledgeable) answered my myriad of questions, calmed my nerves & kept me focused on my end goals.  They do the surgery either in their office building on an outpatient basis or in the hospital where you have to stay overnight & I chose the hospital (John Muir Medical Center) due to insurance issues.  The staff at the hospital were amazing, too- so nice & attentive & really on top of everything.  They even have pre-surgery classes- I attended 2 of them- in which hospital staff go over every aspect of the surgery & recovery process, give you medical supplies & answer all of your questions.  This sounds so nutty but I feel that my surgery was actually a pleasant experience thanks to all of the awesome people who worked on me!  I was totally freaked out the day before surgery & called Dr. Toma's office to find out what would happen if I cancelled & they were so nice about it- Dr. Toma himself called me back while I was eating dinner at a restaurant near the hospital to talk me through it & let me know that it was totally my decision whether or not to do it.  The surgery itself was short- less than 2 hours- & honestly the worst part of the whole thing was waking up in the post-op room & not being able to feel my legs for 4 hours due to the spinal block.  Thankfully the nurses gave me plenty of Fentanyl to get me through & before I knew it I was cruising around the hospital in my walker!  I only stayed 1 night & they made me demonstrate that I could walk up & down a mini staircase before they released me.  I started home PT immediately, did it for 1 month & then did outpatient PT for 3 months & am now totally recovered 5 months post-op!  I've been dancing, bike riding, traveling / flying & doing short hikes with no problems, am basically pain free & can barely feel the titanium device.  Thanks for reading about my THR experience with Dr. Toma- he truly gave me back my life & can do the same for you!

I had a BHR (hip resurfacing) on my left hip in 2006, with another surgeon, and it is doing well. I delayed getting my right hip done until 2016 but finally it got so bad that I could put it off no longer. I'd spent 10 years on the Internet reviewing hip resurfacing and total hip replacement and surgeons all over the U.S. and all over the World. My choice was a THR (total hip replacement) anterior approach with Dr. Toma in Walnut Creek. He's high tech and he has thousands of operations under his belt. Everything went perfectly and the hip has never given me a problem and feels great.

Anyway, I will try to put everything into one review - Dr. Toma performed total hip replacement on my right hip after my 70th birthday. My hip was not "bone-on-bone", but I had been experiencing a continuously reducing range of motion and tying my right shoe had become painful. I was not able to twist my right foot enough to see the bottom of my foot. I could walk OK, but had given up running years ago. Now that I have passed the 12-week, final-checkup point, I am happy to provide my 5-star rating. The administrative aspects of setting up the surgery through John Muir were occasionally bumpy, but, once I arrived for the actual surgery, the process went very smoothly. Dr. Toma did his artistry in about 65 minutes and then I was sent to a nearby area to wait for the spinal block to wear off. [You must be able to wiggle your toes before you are taken to your hospital room] A few hours after I could wiggle my toes, I was up and gingerly walking the halls of the hospital with my walker - on the same day as the surgery, albeit with an attached IV that was delivering some sort of pain killer. I suppose this walking helps set the titanium prosthesis and tamps it down a bit into the femur. I went home, the next day. My hip was pretty painful during the first 24 hours at home, but not enough to drive me to take any pain killers. After the first 24 hours, the pain was entirely tolerable and diminished continuously. My incision was healed enough to start swimming at about 3 weeks and the non-load-bearing flutter kick helped heal my hip, as did the assigned physical therapy exercises, including frequent, short walks with a crutch from the moment I got home. Fewer than 13 weeks after the surgery, I participated in a "Tri For Fun" sprint triathlon. I did very-low-impact [rather slow] "glide walking" and had no hip problems with the swim or bike. Irrespective of age of participant, and even with my slow walk/run, I finished ahead of about 30 others. After such a long layoff, no complaint from me. I am very grateful to Dr. Toma and to the nursing staff at John Muir Medical Center in Concord

I had my left THA done on July 5, 2017. Mr Toma is the best THA surgeon. He is very kind, sincere and caring. His nurses and team are very professional and caring as well. I had my surgery at 7:30 am and I was walking in the same afternoon. I walked out the hospital in 2 days without a cane or wheel chair.

I actually have one word for Dr. Toma and that is GREAT !!! He did a anterior total  hip replacement February 27, 2015 .  He is a gifted surgeon !!!

In October 2012, Dr. Toma performed a total anterior hip replacement on my left hip and then the same for my right hip in May of 2013. He was an ANGEL sent to me finally after many years of chronic pain, and the prior doctors not finding the cause. II was in denial when I first saw him in 2011. But with his caring and charismatic manner, he helped me realize how much I needed the surgery. I also am swimming and snorkeling, biking, hiking, dancing, doing yoga. Before the operations I could barely walk, tie my shoes or get into my car! I was also falling down regularly. You are a Godsend Dr. Louay Toma! and I am forever grateful to you and Muir Orthepedic staff and specialists!! I was given a new lease on life!

A year ago June I had my right hip surgically replaced by Dr. Louay Toma/Muir Orthopedics.  He used the "anterior" approach and hip replacement surgery was a major success on all counts.  I'm a 72 year old female who had missed taking daily fit walks because my arthritic hip wouldn't allow it (much too painful; bone on bone).  Having recovered from hip surgery quite quickly, my hip now feels like the good hip I was born with - no residual pain, no discomfort, nothing but a small scar and it too is beginning to fade.  Dr. Toma has performed thousands of hip replacement surgeries and he's the only doctor I would go to again if my left hip needed replacement (thankfully it doesn't).  Good Bless Dr. Toma and the nursing and support staff at John Muir Hospital/Concord.  I feel like a new woman and can dance, fit walk, practice yoga/pilates/zumba, all the stuff I did before osteoarthritis set in.

Four weeks ago Dr. Toma performed my hip replacement using the anterior approach.  I am well on my way to healing and have felt exceptionally well after the first week.  Dr. Toma is not only a skilled surgeon, he is a caring and dedicated doctor.  The staff in his office are just exceptional.  So professional and caring also.  I also had a great experience at John Muir Hospital where my surgery was done.  We live 2 hours away and believe me, it was worth every mile to have Dr. Toma perform my surgery.   Mary Walser

I can't say enough good things about Dr. Tomay. He is a wonderful sugeon and has the anterior hip replacement process down to an art. I went back to Tai Chi class 2 weeks after surgery and after one year I am happier than ever that I had it done. The keys are don't wait! If you need it go for it and make sure you are rigorous about doing your Physical Therapy afterward. It makes all the difference in recovery.

I have my left hip replaced by Dr. Toma about six weeks ago. He used anterior approach and computer assisted surgery technology.  Dr. Toma and his team, including John Muir hospital staff and my in-home physical therapist made entire process very easy for me.  No real pain to speak of, a little discomfort, but nothing that I would call pain. I quit using the cane after 4 days and went back to work 10 days after the operation. I walk normal and am pretty much back to my usual daily exercise routine now.  I am totally pleased with the result and cannot wait to get my right hip replaced too.

Dr. Toma replaced my 69 year old hip 2 weeks ago. 5 years ago  my other hip had been replaced-anterior method , different surgeon. Dr. Toma has refined the anterior hip replacement  to the highest level. In comparison to 5 years ago, my recovery has been faster with minimum pain and greater  mobility. He is a highly skilled sugeon who I would recommend to anyone needing a hip replacement
