Treatment of Common Finger Injuries in Sport

Hand injuries can occur in any sport.  Even in sports that seem relatively contact-free like baseball, fractures, dislocations, and sprains still happen.  Pain, swelling, redness or bruising, stiffness, numbness, or obvious deformity are all indications of a finger injury.

Watch as Dr Kenneth Mensch explains in this video on what to watch out for with a finger injury.

Rest, ice, and elevation are excellent first steps to take in treating finger injuries, but compression may reduce circulation and could result in nerve damage.  Treatment for most finger injuries includes protection, immobilization, and rehabilitation.

If the finger isn’t very swollen, and can still perform full range of motion, another person may buddy tape the injury.  Buddy taping sprains will help to support and stabilize an injured finger while it heals. Watch our video on how to buddy tape the affected finger securely to its neighbor both above and below the injury for support.

Even a seemingly minor hand injury may result in lifelong deformity or disability if the injury is left untreated.  If your fingers appear crooked, crossed, or you are unable to make a fist, make an appointment to have your injury evaluated by a hand & wrist specialist at Golden State Orthopedics & Spine.
