OSTEOCHONDRAL LESIONS
Osteochondral lesions (OCLs) are defects that occur in the cartilage and underlying bone of a joint. These lesions can be caused by:
- Trauma
- Repetitive stress
- Underlying conditions such as osteoarthritis.
The symptoms of OCLs can vary depending on the severity and location of the lesion but often include:
- Pain
- Swelling
- Limited range of motion
OCLs are not always avoidable, but there are steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of developing them. These include:
- Maintaining a healthy weight
- Staying active
- Avoiding activities that put excessive stress on the joints
Non-surgical treatment options for OCLs include:
- Rest
- Physical therapy
- Medications to reduce pain and inflammation
In some cases, injections of corticosteroids may be used to reduce pain and inflammation. However, if these treatments are not effective, surgery may be necessary to repair or replace the damaged cartilage and bone.
If you suspect you have an OCL, it’s important to see a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan.
