Bahia Tortugas is a tiny fishing village on the western coast of Baja, CA, and home to about two thousand people who are served by one doctor and his “pasante” or intern. They have limited medical facilities, no functioning operating room, and none of the advanced diagnostic equipment we in the United States consider standard such as an MRI.

A Picture Perfect Recovery

2024-02-02T15:04:32-08:00

In preparation for wedding photos, Matthew Heffernan and his fiancée, Sophie, had been using sunscreen for weeks.  Then Matt went for a bike ride on Mount Diablo.

On his way back down the mountain, his rear wheel locked up and he spun out.  Still protecting his face for the wedding photos, Matt put out his left hand to break his fall, and broke his wrist as well, resulting in five breaks and soft tissue damage.  “We didn’t plan for injury!” Matt laughed.

EAT (RIGHT!), PRAY, LOVE

Kevin’s weight loss journey started years ago.  His younger brother was extremely overweight which made Kevin think about his own weight.  What number would be his tipping point?  When would it be “too late”?  He decided his number was 300 pounds.

Years passed and Kevin realized that his weight had crept up on him, and he was sitting at 291 pounds.  He was prediabetic, had kidney stones and many other health issues and was in and out of doctors’ offices or the hospital with alarming frequency.   At his tipping point, Kevin began making

Meniscus Root Tear

2024-01-24T09:05:50-08:00

A meniscus root tear is a type of knee injury that affects the meniscus, a C-shaped cartilage structure located in the knee joint. The meniscus has two roots that anchor it to the tibia (shinbone), and when these roots are torn or detached, it is referred to as a meniscus root tear. This injury can cause significant pain and functional impairment in the knee.

Causes

Meniscus root tears are typically caused by traumatic injuries or degenerative changes in the knee joint. Some common causes include:

Trochanteric Bursitis of the Hip

2024-03-18T13:17:19-07:00

A bursa is a small, fluid-filled sac which acts as a gliding surface, reducing friction in the movement of the larger joints in the body. They may act singly or in groups (bursae) to help your bones, tendons, muscles, and skin slid easily across each other as you move and bend.

Bursitis is irritation or inflammation of the bursa. Trochanteric bursitis (greater trochanteric pain syndrome or GTPS) is inflammation of the bursa that lies between bone and muscle in the hip. Hip bursitis can affect anyone, but women, middle-aged, and elderly people are more likely to develop it. In most cases, bursitis
